How does a lawyer get paid?

The government sets the fee for representation on Social Security Disability cases and Supplemental Security (SSI). The attorney receives 25% of the retroactive award. So, if you receive $10,000.00 in back money, the government sends you $7,500 and the attorney $2,500. There is a cap of $6,000.00 right now so that no matter how much the retroactive is, the fee is the LESSER of 25% or $6,000.00.

Sure, it would have been a whole lot better to not have to hire a lawyer. I get it. You are the one who is impaired from working and this is money that you have paid into the system all these years. But the government has created a maze and it is very difficult without capable representation to get you through it. The figures don’t lie. Having a lawyer or not involved will make a dramatic difference in whether you ever see the benefit.
